Artschool Year Program

Paint, Draw, Sculpt, and Play!

Our popular Artschool Year Program allows your child to grow along side their creative peers in a professional studio art class - creating masterpieces to music and building community with laughter.  The art school covers a diverse range of skills including Acrylic painting, watercolors, drawing from life, oil and soft pastels, pen and ink, various clays, and mixed media projects.

A day at Artschool

Students meet weekly to create their masterpieces. Classes begin with a 40-minute lesson and introduction via a master study. Master studies tell a story. The themes cover a wide range of art periods from Dutch Post-Impressionism like Van Gogh's sunflowers to Japanese ukiyo-e like Hokusai's waves.

Then Susun will perform a live demonstration of the techniques from the introduction and students follow along and try their own hand, practicing the techniques they've learned.

For the remainder of the class students can resume their works-in-progress or continue with the lesson of the day.  During this open-ended time, Susun will provide one-on-one instruction to students as they work.

Annual Artshows

At the end of the yearly program students can participate in the annual Susun Gallery Art Show in May, where they are recognized for their hard work and dedication throughout the school year. Additionally, we also participate in the Young at Art Statewide Exhibition in March and Art in the Park in Downtown Hilo.
